2007年9月1日にアップしたエントリーですが、内容が不確かな点があったため、修正の上再掲しています。

先週末から気が気でないギリシャの山火事のニュース。8月30日以降鎮火に向かっているらしい。この一週間は会社でも、ギリシャのニュースサイトを開きっぱなしだった。日本から何かできることをと思い、まずは日本赤十字に、今回の山火事災害で災害募金をする予定がないかどうか聞いてみた。すると 次のような返事。

このたびはご連絡を頂、ありがとうございます。
ギリシャの山火事については、救援金の募集はいたしません。
救援金の募集は被災国の赤十字社からジュネーブにある赤十字の本部（赤十字・赤新月社連盟）に対し、救援アピールがあった場合にのみ各国の赤十字社に対し救援金の呼びかけがありますが、救援アピール額が５億円程度であれば各国赤十字社が持っている国際救援基金の中で補われます。
このたびのギリシャ山火事災害では、現在のところ何の救援アピールも出ておりませんので、申し訳ございませんが、救援金の募集はいたしません。
今後、状況が変わることがあれば、弊社ホームページに掲載あしますので、その際にはご支援、ご協力をいただきますようお願いいたします。

この組織にもなにかいろいろある様子。世界規模の組織だから、身動きがとりにくいのか……。しょうがないので、クレタに住む友人に何か義援金の募集がないかの情報を聞いてみた。彼は、テレビ局やら新聞社に連絡して、日本からできる手助けはないかいろいろ調べ回ってくれている。そうこうしているうちに、こんなメールが届いた。

ここにあるサイトを見ていたが、どこもアメリカ合衆国拠点の団体らしく、ギリシャ国外の団体への募金は見送り。そのあともあれこれ調べたところ、以下のようなサイトを発見。先のクレタの友人とコンタクトを取りながら、どこが信頼できる義援金送付先かをさらにチェック中。やはり、Bank of GreeceとかRed Cross（赤十字）あたりが無難だろうか。とにもかくにも、こういった義援金活動は、慎重にならざるを得ない。

It was decided that the Bank will contribute the amount of €5,000,000 to the restoration effort and the aid of victims.

In response to the catastrophic fires plaguing Greece, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of America, convened an emergency meeting of key advisors and staff members to mobilize the resources of the Archdiocese and greater community to respond to the tremendous needs of the people of this devastated nation. It was agreed that His Eminence would appoint a Special Committee of prominent Greek Americans who will oversee and coordinate the collection and distribution of monies raised by the Archdiocese through Her Greek Fire Relief Fund.

しかし、山火事の勢いがひどいときは、日本でもあちらこちらで珍しくギリシャのことが報道されたが、「鎮火に向かっている」というニュースは、今のところ見ても、聞いてもいない。Yahoo!ニュースの「ギリシャ」トピックスも久しぶりに復活の様子だが、いろんなニュース配信社やニュースサイトのニュースを集めたこのサービスでも、このエントリーを書いている時点で最新のニュースは8月29日10時48分に配信された某新聞社の「ギリシャ山火事の死者６４人に、マラトン近郊でも発生」という見出しのもの。最後まで報道しない姿勢は、やっぱり報道の無責任だと思うのだが……
